This region is known for its Fujiapples, Kyohou (big grapes) and Matsutake (a type of flavorful mushrooms). Soba noodles, walnuts and ginseng, which have been used as medicine for almost 10 centuries in this region, are also famous.

  
Tsumugi (silk fabrics)

Tsumugiis traditional Japanese silk cloth dating from the Edo period (1603~1867). During the Meiji(1868~1912) and Taisho(1912~1926) periods, Ueda became one of the top silk producing areas of Japan and prospered as the ‘Silkworm Capital’.  Tsumugi silk is spun from imperfect cocoons. The cloth is strong and can wear well for a long time. Handmade tsumugi is known to be better than machine- made cloth.

                                       
Tsukeba Fishing

Huts called tsukebaare established on the banks of the Chikuma River from April through October. Fish named daces and chubs are caught during their spawning season from April to June using a throwing method called Yana, where a net placed in the river’s shallows.  Fish caught in the river are cooked in the hut and served as shioyaki(fish cooked with salt) or dengaku (fish baked with soybean paste).
